This Flowline Center article teaches you how to find new people to follow on Instagram. If you know the name of the account you want to follow, you can easily search for it from Instagram’s search tool. You can also use Instagram’s Discover tool to find suggestions of people to follow, including contacts from your Facebook account or phone book.
Method 1: Searching by Username
1- Open Instagram. Tap the orange, pink, and purple camera icon in the app prompt to launch Instagram. This will open Instagram’s home page if you are logged in.

2- Tap the magnifying glass icon. It’s the second icon at the bottom of the screen.
3- Tap the search bar. It’s the gray area at the top of the screen with “Search” in it. Your phone’s keyboard will open.

4- Tap the Accounts tab. This limits your search on Instagram to contacts.
5- Type a name or account name. Results will appear below the search bar as you type.
6- Tap the account you want to follow. This opens the user’s profile. If the account is not private, you will see your posts. So, if his account is private, you will only see his profile picture and bio.
If you don’t see the account you want to follow, try scrolling down the page.
7- Tap the blue Follow button. It’s near the top left corner of the page. So you follow the account; You will be able to find this account in the Follow section of your own profile from now on.
If the account is private, tapping the Follow button will send a follow request to the account owner. If the person approves the request, you will start following the account.

Method 2: Using the Discover Tool
1- Open Instagram. Tap the orange, pink, and purple camera icon in the app prompt to launch Instagram. This will open Instagram’s home page if you are logged in.
1- Tap on your profile icon. This is your profile picture in the lower right corner of the screen. This opens your profile.
3- Tap the ☰ menu. It’s the three horizontal lines in the upper right corner. A menu will open.
4- Tap +Discover People. This is a silhouette of a person with a + sign next to it. You’ll find this at the bottom of the menu. This will show you a list of Instagram accounts you might want to follow.
5- Find a profile you want to follow. Scroll down to the suggested accounts until you find an account you want to follow.
If you have linked your contacts to Instagram, you will find some people who have an Instagram account in your directory in this list. See Pairing Phone or Tablet Contacts for how to link your contacts.
If you haven’t linked your Instagram account to Facebook, you’ll see “Facebook” with a blue Connect button at the top of the screen. If you want your Facebook friends with Instagram accounts to appear in the Discover list, click the Link button and follow the on-screen instructions to make the adjustments.

6- Click on a profile. So you can review the profile of the person opened. If the page is not private, you will see that person’s posts. If the account is private, you will only see your profile picture and bio.
7- Tap Follow to follow the account. It’s a blue button at the top of the screen. Thus, you follow the account, so you can find this account in the Following section of your own profile from now on.
If the account is private, tapping the Follow button will send a follow request to the account owner. If the person approves the request, you will start following the account.
You can return to the Discover page by tapping the back button and find more people to follow on Instagram.
Method 3: Pairing Phone or Tablet Contacts
1- Open Instagram. Tap the orange, pink, and purple camera icon in the app list to launch Instagram. This will open Instagram’s home page if you are logged in.
2- Tap on your profile icon. This is your profile picture in the lower right corner of the screen. This opens your profile.

3- Tap the ☰ menu. It’s the three horizontal lines in the upper right corner. A menu will open.
4- Tap on Settings. It’s the gear icon at the top of the menu.
5- Tap on Account. This is at the bottom of the menu.[1]
6- Tap Contacts Sync. This is in the middle of the menu.
7- Slide the “Link Your Contacts” switch to On. Thus, the phone is paired with the Instagram servers of the directory. Once the pairing is complete, you’ll start seeing people with Instagram accounts in your contacts in the Discover list.
You can disconnect the contacts sync at any time by toggling this switch to Off.
